Our
History
In 1962, the Penn-Trafford PTA Council proposed a one-term adult
education program as an experimental project.
One of the first of its kind in the area at the time, the Penn-Trafford
adult education program was designed, in part, to provide opportunities
for learning or reviewing job skills close to home.
That first term, 10 classes were offered and 150 students were enrolled.
The Penn-Trafford School District serves Penn Township, Trafford
Borough, Manor Borough, and Penn Borough in western Westmoreland County,
PA.
PTAE Today
Today, Penn-Trafford
Adult Education (PTAE) is still organizing and running classes for adults in the
Penn-Trafford School District and surrounding areas, with the continued
support given to the committee by the administration, staff, faculty,
and custodians of the school district. While instructors are paid, the
members of the Penn-Trafford Adult Education committee are all dedicated
volunteers.
PTAE offers something for most every interest, with about
90 classes offered per year. They offer fitness classes like aerobics, swimming,
water aerobics, and yoga. They offer craft classes like painting, floral
arranging, quilting, and stained glass. They offer life skills classes such as finances, stress
management, college planning, and computers. And, they offer
special interest classes such as cooking,
ballroom dance, golf, antiques, and vacation get-aways.
While the favorite classes are held each
session, new classes are always being added! Members of the
committee draw upon their own assortment of interests and
those of neighbors and friends to find instructors and come
up with new and exciting class offerings.
Classes are scheduled in three sessions --
fall, winter, and spring. Both residents and non-residents
of the school district are welcome to register for classes.
The fall and spring class brochures are
mailed to residents of the Penn-Trafford School District in the August
(for the fall)
and February (for the spring) issues of the school
district's "Prospectus" newsletter. The winter class
brochure is handed out to students during a take-home
Tuesday in November. Class brochures can also be picked up at the Penn Area
or Trafford library, the
Harrison City or Trafford post office, and Irwin Bank on
Route 130. Current classes are also listed on this web site.
